Sending Amami’s Tradition to the World
Welcome to studio Loop Amami!
This is the website of a small studio that creates traditional “baby ceremonial mawashi” (decorative sumo aprons for infants) using Oshima Tsumugi and other traditional textiles, following a custom unique to Amami Oshima Island. Every year from August to October, the island holds Hojonsai, a harvest festival that prays for abundance and the healthy growth of children. As part of the festival, baby boys take part in their very first ring-entering ceremony (hatsu-dohyo-iri) wearing a ceremonial mawashi. This piece becomes a treasured keepsake for a lifetime, and is cherished by many as an especially meaningful gift.
Every piece is a handmade, one-of-a-kind creation, made only after we receive your order. Each one is crafted carefully and with care, with heartfelt wishes for your child’s healthy growth.

Working in Kohnoya, Setouchi Town on Amami Oshima Island, I have been creating handcrafted pieces using Oshima Tsumugi and other traditional materials. In particular, I have made many “baby ceremonial mawashi,” a cherished part of Amami’s cultural heritage. By carefully listening to each customer and pouring care into every piece, my work has been warmly received by many families.
